Businesses of all sizes incorporate VoIP software and handsets to gain more flexibility, increase the security of their operations, reduce phone-related expenses and allow their employees to stay connected from anywhere in the world.
If you are interested in incorporating a VoIP solution for your business, you probably want to know more about the technology and how it works.
What is a VoIP handset?
VoIP phones or VoIP handsets are Voice-over-Internet-Protocol technologies used to enhance business communications and reduce traditional telephone network expanses. The main difference between modern VoIP phones and conventional telephone lines is that busy professionals can work remotely from their home office or a hotel with VoIP technology.
VoIP solutions are reliable phone systems that incorporate HD voice calls, video conferencing, instant messaging, voicemail-to-text, and other functions that older phone systems do not. You can use IP phones on laptops, computers, smartphones, particular handsets, or old phones via an adapter.
How does it work?
A VoIP phone system involves using a software that you need to install and set up on your device. To achieve HD voice quality and the execution of other functions such as conference calls, they convert analogue signals into digital and send them over the Internet.
Most VoIP phones work through protocols requiring SIP accounts (Session Initiation Protocol). When they receive digital data, they split it into information packets and assign each one of them a destination address.
Then, they send the data over the VoIP lines to the router and the final destination. SIP phones gather the information packets and assigned addresses at the receiving end to align them in the correct order and transform them into recognizable speech.
VoIP handsets setup and configuration
Your VoIP handset setup will mostly depend on the model and network setup.
Some VoIP providers rely on PoE support (Power-over-Ethernet), where the electrical signal is carried over in one wire instead of multiple ones. In that case, you need to use an Ethernet cable to connect the handset to one of the Gigabit Ethernet ports. The handset should turn on and connect to the VoIP provider automatically.
If you own one of the VoIP phone models without PoE, you need to plug in the AC adapter in the outlet and the handset base and use a CAT5e or CAT6 cable to connect the IP phone to the router. Then, all you need to do is wait for initialization.
